Senegalese American R&B recording artist and songwriter Akon was born on April 16, 1973. His birth name is Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam. Akon was born in St. Louis, Missouri and was raised in a musical setting. His father, Mor Thiam, a Senegalese percussionist taught him to play different instruments. Akon also lived in Dakar, Senegal and permanently reside in Newark, New Jersey. Akon claimed that he is a Muslim and never drunk or smoke. However, there are some debates regarding his real name and birthdate. Akon was usually credited by the name Aliuane Thiam. The names Aliaune Badara Thiam and Alioune Badara Thiam have never been independently verified. Akon was imprisoned for three years. During this time, he recognized his music abilities and appreciated his musical background. Devyne Stephens, the music tycoon first heard Akon when ‘Lil Zane brought him to the tycoon’s rehearsal hall. The relationship between the tycoon and Akon grew as friends, he often stop to Stephens to ask for advice for his music. When Akon lost his deal on Electra Records, Stephen signed Akon to his company and began to teach him professionally. His first album, Trouble was released on June 29, 2004. The album’s singles, Locked Up, Lonely Belly Dancer (Bananza), Pot of Gold and Ghetto. He used his three year imprisonment as an inspiration for his debut album. His single Locked Up peaked at top ten spot in the U.S and top five in the U.K. Most of his songs start with a sound of
clatter of a cell’s door with him uttering the word “Konvict”. His single Lonely reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100, it also topped charts in Australia, UK and Germany. His album also peaked at the top spot in UK in 2005. Akon was highly
acclaimed by critics in his guest appearance on Young Jeezy’s first album. Konvicted is his second album that was released on November 14, 2006. His first single, “Smack That” featuring Eminem peaked at the second spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for five consecutive weeks. His second single of the album, I Wanna Love You featuring Snoop Dogg was his first song to top the Billboard Hot 100. The single topped the U.S charts for two weeks. Don’t matter was his third single that also peaked number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
